The center was founded in 2004 with the partnership of New York City, philanthropies and advocates for the city's charter schools, which are expected to increase up to 80 by September.
James D. Merriman IV is the chief executive of the New York City Center for Charter School Excellence. He was formerly with the Walton Family Foundation and served as an executive director of the Charter Schools Institute of the State University of New.
